More About Brittany

While the world political powers generally consider Brittany to be part of France, those who live there don't necessarily agree. Like the British occupation of Northern Ireland, this conflict has led to extensive civil unrest. In developing the CRA Languages page, I made the gross error of oversimplifying this situation by referring to France as the geographical home of the Breton language. I was (quite justly) criticized by a reader for this error. Yan writes:

I wonder where you found that Breton language is coming from France? Breton is from Brittany, the Celtic Republic should know Brittany is a French occupied country.

Brit·ta·ny (brît´n-ê) also Bre·tagne (bre-tän´ye) - Breizh in Breton
Celtic historical country, Northwest 'near' France on a peninsula between the English Channel and the Bay of Biscay. In 500AD, Brythonics driven out of their homeland by the Anglo-Saxons 'immigrated' to Armoric. The country was formally 'annexed' by France in 1532. Breton is the language of Brittany.
