The Tartan in Appalachia

Kathleen Dupree

An excellent exhibit focusing on the history of the Tartan in Scotland and it's meaning to Scottish descendents in America is currently showing in Atlanta, Ga. The Tartan: Cultural Fabric of a Nation opened on August 27 and will run through June 17, 2000 at the Atlanta International Museum.

The museum is located on the lobby level of the Marquis II tower at Peachtree Center, 285 Peachtree Center Avenue in downtown Atlanta. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11am to 5 pm.

The tartan has become a badge of tradition for modern descendents of the early Scottish and Scotch-Irish settlers of Appalachia. The Atlanta exhibit traces the evolution of the tartan from the dress of highland warriors in the 17th century to it's mark of clan identity at modern highland games and other Scottish cultural events in America.
