CELTIC MISCELLANIES
by Tom Crotty
- St. David (Dewi Sant), the patron saint of wales, was baptized by
a sixth century bishop of munster named Elvis. Elvis was also David's
cousin (from St David of Dewisland by Nona Rees). The welsh
mountains from which the bluestones for stonehenge were quarried are
the Prescelly mountains. Was Elvis (Presley) a Celt?
- Glastonbury, a town in the west of England that is steeped in
Arthurian legend, derives its name from the Old Celtic 'glasto'
meaning 'a place where the woad grows' (from Flora Brittanica by
Richard Mabrey).
- The Irish word for 'Celt' is Ceilteach with the initial 'c'
capitalized. With the 'c' lower case, the word means 'secretive or
witholding' (from Focloir Poca).
- Knoxville, where the CRA was founded, derives its name from the
Irish or Gaelic word 'cnoc" meaning 'a hill'. As anyone who lives
here can tell you, it is an apt name.
